Garbatulla Hospital Unveils New Radiology and Theatre Services

Garbatulla Hospital has achieved a significant milestone in healthcare access for residents of Isiolo County. The official opening of radiology and theatre services was marked by the successful completion of the hospital’s first C-section procedure. This life-saving operation had previously required expectant mothers to travel long distances to receive care.

With these new services now available, Garbatulla Sub-County residents can access essential medical care without the burden of extensive travel. This development marks a turning point for healthcare in the region.

This achievement is the result of three years of dedicated efforts to overcome significant challenges. Staffing shortages and non-functional equipment had hindered the hospital’s ability to provide adequate services. However, strong leadership from Isiolo County’s Chief Officer for Medical Services, Mr. Abdirahman Mohammed, and Director of Medical Services, Abdi Mohamed Boru, played a vital role in overcoming these obstacles.

“Today, Garbatulla has every reason to celebrate,” stated Chief Officer Abdirahman. “Patients no longer need to travel to Isiolo town, Meru, or other counties. Thanks to Governor Ibrahim Hassan’s unwavering commitment, essential services are now within reach.” This progress exemplifies the county’s focused efforts to enhance healthcare delivery for its residents.

The launch of radiology and theatre services complements the readiness of the Accident and Emergency Unit at Isiolo Teaching and Referral Hospital. This expansion enhances healthcare infrastructure in the region. Furthermore, the recent opening of Mwangaza Dispensary, along with plans for five more dispensaries, will bring healthcare even closer to residents in surrounding villages.

This strategic expansion is expected to improve timely access to medical care, addressing long-standing gaps in the local healthcare system.

To support these initiatives, Garbatulla Hospital has been strengthened by the county government’s investment in human resources. Additional clinicians, nurses, and radiologists have been recruited to ensure high-quality care for residents when they need it most. Future plans include introducing dental and optical services to meet the community’s healthcare needs.

Dr. Shukri Abdullahi, who performed the first C-section, highlighted the positive impact of the new facility: “This theatre will save many patients from areas like Sericho and Modagashe from exhausting referrals to Isiolo for basic care. Both mother and newborn are stable, and this is just the beginning.” His remarks reflect a hopeful outlook for the future of healthcare in the region.

Local resident Nasir Sharriff expressed gratitude for the healthcare upgrades, stating, “For years, we faced emergencies with limited options. Now, with these services in Garbatulla, our people can access critical care locally.” This sentiment resonates deeply within the community, where many have long awaited improvements to healthcare services.

Garbatulla Hospital serves the expansive Isiolo South Constituency, which includes Sericho, Garbatulla, and Kinna wards. The new facilities are expected to significantly alleviate the strain on Isiolo County Referral Hospital.

As the community celebrates this significant milestone, it can look forward to a future where healthcare is more accessible, efficient, and responsive to the needs of all residents. This achievement not only enhances the quality of life for the people of Garbatulla but also sets a powerful precedent for healthcare improvement across the region.
