Government Action on Security Crisis in Dabel Mining Sites

Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration.

In response to escalating security threats and criminal activities at the Dabel Artisanal Mining Sites within Golbo Division, Marsabit County, the government has implemented urgent measures to restore law and order. Recent incidents, including gang rivalries resulting in fatalities and cases of drug trade and gender-based violence, have prompted swift action from authorities. A specialized team from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has been deployed to investigate and apprehend perpetrators involved in these crimes.

Effective immediately from 0630 hours on March 14, 2024, the Dabel Artisanal Mining Sites specified in Gazette Notice No.3032 have been designated as “dangerous and disturbed,” with evacuation orders issued. Pursuant to relevant sections of the Public Order Act and the National Police Service Act, unauthorized access to these areas is strictly prohibited without written authorization from the County Police Commander, Marsabit County. Security agencies are mandated to enforce these directives to ensure public safety and prevent further criminal activities.

The gazetted areas will remain under the control of national security agencies, with stringent measures in place to prevent unauthorized entry or any form of activity within the designated zones. The government emphasizes its commitment to addressing security challenges in the region and maintaining peace and stability for residents. These orders will remain in force indefinitely, subject to review and potential modifications directed by the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration.
