Heavy Rains Cause Water Shortage in Isiolo

Nura Bonaya, the Commercial Manager at Isiolo Water and Sewage Company (IWASCO), sheds light on the water shortage predicament currently affecting parts of Isiolo Central due to incessant heavy rains in the region’s catchment areas.

Bonaya emphasizes IWASCO’s operational landscape, highlighting the critical role played by the Mwangaza and Kambi ya Juu water treatment plants, both heavily reliant on the Isiolo River as their primary water source. However, the recent surge in turbidity levels, a consequence of the heavy rains, has posed significant challenges to water treatment processes.

In response to the escalating turbidity levels, Bonaya underscores IWASCO’s proactive approach, which involves vigilant monitoring of turbidity levels until they reach suitable levels for treatment. He stresses the importance of avoiding excessive chemical usage in treating water with high turbidity, as it could potentially yield water unfit for domestic use.

Acknowledging the inevitable inconvenience caused by water rationing measures in affected areas such as Tulluroba, Mwangaza, CBD, and Kulamawe, Bonaya assures residents that these measures are essential for effectively managing the current situation.

Regarding the drilling of boreholes, Bonaya sheds light on the logistical challenges posed by the scarcity of public land in Isiolo Central. Despite these challenges, he highlights the presence of 21 boreholes installed in public institutions, catering to other parts of Isiolo Central and remaining unaffected by the current water shortages.

Looking ahead, Bonaya reaffirms IWASCO’s commitment to promptly addressing the water shortage and restoring normalcy to the affected areas. Despite the formidable obstacles presented by the heavy rains, IWASCO remains resolute in its mission to ensure uninterrupted access to clean and safe water for all residents of Isiolo Central.
