Isiolo County Advances Child Protection Policy

The Isiolo County Government, led by Governor Abdi Ibrahim Hassan Guyo, is stepping up efforts to protect children. Leaders are undergoing training to ensure the smooth implementation of the Isiolo County Child Protection Policy 2025.

Today, County Executive Committee (CEC) members attended a sensitization session. Tomorrow, Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) will undergo similar training. These sessions aim to align both arms of government for a coordinated approach to child welfare.

Deputy Governor James Lowasa, also the CEC for Gender, Culture, and Social Services, opened the forum. He emphasized that child protection requires collective action. He assured stakeholders of the county’s commitment to strengthening child protection systems.

The policy focuses on preventing abuse, neglect, harmful cultural practices, and exploitation. It introduces measures such as deploying social services officers in every ward and engaging child protection volunteers. Additionally, it establishes referral pathways to improve service delivery. The policy also encourages collaboration between government agencies, civil society organizations, and community leaders.

Last week, a Technical Working Group Consultation Forum reviewed the policy. Stakeholders discussed ways to enhance child protection services and support community-based initiatives. The forum identified gaps and proposed stronger implementation strategies.

Deputy Governor Lowasa reaffirmed the county’s dedication to child welfare. The administration has allocated KSh. 6 million to Almasi Children’s Home. It is also procuring assistive devices for children with disabilities. The policy highlights the need for data collection and emergency preparedness to safeguard children during crises.

The policy’s development has received support from IDRC_CDRI, Aga Khan University Institute for Human Development (AKUIHD), FCDCKenya, UNICEFKenya, and NCCS_Ke. Their financial and technical contributions have been crucial in shaping Isiolo’s child protection framework.

Governor Guyo’s administration remains committed to improving child welfare services. The county urges all stakeholders, including community leaders and civil society organizations, to support the policy rollout. With proper coordination and resources, Isiolo County is laying a strong foundation for child protection and a better future for its children.
