Isiolo County Revokes Neno Sacco License

Isiolo County Government has revoked Neno Sacco’s license to address congestion at the Isiolo matatu terminus. Officials decided this after meeting with over ten saccos.

Yussuf Dahir, Committee Member for Land, Physical Planning, Road Transport, and Urban Development, said they based the decision on extensive consultations. “Our goal is to improve Isiolo’s transport sector and manage space effectively,” Dahir explained.

Currently, Isiolo faces a shortage of space for saccos. To fix this, the county plans to acquire more land and build new terminals. These steps will help meet the town’s needs.

During the meeting, County Secretary Dadhe Boru, Chief Officer for Housing and Urban Development Dr. Mohammed Mero, and Municipal Manager Osman Halake emphasized the need for cooperation. Halake urged members to “work together to resolve issues amicably.”

On July 15, 2024, the Isiolo Matatu Owners Association protested Neno Sacco’s operations. They claimed it violated a county assembly resolution and criticized Osman Halake’s decision to grant a loading zone to an Embu-based Sacco without consulting stakeholders.

Chair Mohamed Ahmed (Koroboi) led the protest to the County Offices. He argued that Embu counterparts deny them operating rights and said, “Isiolo should first be decongested and more bus parks created before accommodating new saccos.”

In response, the Isiolo County Government addressed these concerns during the stakeholders’ meeting. They committed to reviewing the situation once the matatu terminus expansion is completed. The government aims to accommodate additional saccos, including those from Embu, ensuring a balanced and efficient transport system in Isiolo.
