Burat Ward MCA Nicholas Lorot is recovering after gunmen shot him in Isiolo Town on Tuesday evening. The attack near Northern Galaxy has fueled concerns over rising insecurity in the region.
Witnesses said Lorot had stepped out of a meeting with Odonyiro MCA and Deputy Speaker David Lemantile when an armed assailant approached his parked vehicle and fired twice. The attacker, disguised in a helmet and reflector jacket, quickly fled. Consequently, panic spread among those nearby.
Despite his injuries, Lorot drove himself to Isiolo Police Station to report the incident before seeking medical attention. Doctors at New Life Care Hospital in Meru later confirmed that two bullets remain lodged in his shoulder and palm. However, Isiolo Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Christopher Siele assured the public that Lorot is stable. In addition, a surgical procedure will remove the bullets.
Leaders across the county strongly condemned the attack. Shortly after the incident, Deputy Speaker Lemantile, Majority Leader Hon. Gira, Hon. Meja, and Hon. Abuzimania rushed to the hospital to ensure Lorot received specialized medical care. Meanwhile, Isiolo Governor Abdi Ibrahim Hassan denounced the shooting and urged security agencies to act swiftly.
“This heinous act of violence is unacceptable. Therefore, I have instructed security agencies to investigate urgently and bring those responsible to justice,” the governor stated.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) processed the crime scene and are reviewing CCTV footage. Moreover, authorities have asked residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
Lorot’s attack adds to the growing insecurity in Isiolo, which has seen several violent incidents in recent weeks. As a result, Fatuma Dullo, the newly appointed Chair of the Senate Committee on National Security, now faces mounting pressure to address the crisis.
