Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has unveiled cutting-edge security equipment aimed at tackling organized crime, particularly terrorism and banditry. This move is part of the government’s ambitious plan to modernize security infrastructure over the next five years, with an estimated investment of KSh 37 billion.
Kindiki emphasized the government’s commitment to suppress and neutralize terrorism, banditry, livestock rustling, and other organized criminal activities. The equipment’s deployment to frontline officers in strategic regions such as the Northeastern region, the Boni enclave, Upper Eastern region, and North Rift underscores its significance in enhancing security operations.
The government’s investment of KSh 7.6 billion over the last six months, with an additional KSh 29.4 billion earmarked for the next three years under the Police Equipment Modernization (PEM) program, demonstrates its dedication to acquiring sophisticated protective and mobility equipment. These include Armoured Personnel Carriers, Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles, drones, gunship helicopters, and Personal Protection Equipment.
Kindiki’s directive to dispatch the first batch of equipment to support Operation Maliza Uhalifu in North Rift, extending to Meru, Isiolo, and Marsabit counties, underscores the government’s proactive approach to addressing security challenges. The event, held at the General Service Unit headquarters in Nairobi, was attended by top security officials, highlighting the importance attached to enhancing security capabilities.
Moreover, ongoing multi-agency security operations against Al Shabaab in Lamu and the Northeastern region have yielded significant results, contributing to a decrease in terrorism impact from high to medium, according to the Global Terrorism Index 2024. Kenya’s efforts in combating terrorism both domestically and in Somalia, where Al Shabaab is based, have been commended, with a notable decline in terrorism deaths attributed to the group.
