President William Ruto’s recent state appointments have sparked discussions on social inclusion, regional balance, and gender representation. Isiolo, Marsabit, and Tana River counties have notably benefited, reflecting the administration’s efforts to empower marginalized communities in leadership roles.
The appointments aim to push for regional balance, gender equality, and inclusive governance. Leaders, including Governor Abdi Guyo of Isiolo County, worked hard to ensure northern Kenya’s voice is heard. Their collective effort helped secure key positions for individuals from these regions.
Among the notable appointments, Boya Molu, a Gabra, former commissioner with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), earned a nomination to the Public Service Commission (PSC). His appointment emphasizes the importance of regional balance and the need for northern Kenya to influence national governance.
Rehema Dida Jaldesa, a former Women’s Representative for Isiolo County and Borana leader, became Chairperson of the National Gender and Equality Commission. Her appointment, a significant milestone for gender and regional representation, stands as a win for northern Kenya. Rehema’s experience, including leadership roles with the Kenya Industrial Estates Board and Ewaso Ng’iro North Development Authority, strengthens her position.
Dr. Zeinab Gura, a Sakuye, medical practitioner with extensive experience at MoH, ascended through the ranks to become the Acting CEO of Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral, and Research Hospital (KUTRRH). This appointment contributes to ongoing healthcare reforms, highlighting northern Kenya’s growing influence in healthcare sectors.
Former Governor Godana Doyo Adhi, a Borana leader, became Chairperson of the National Environmental Complaints Committee. His leadership will address environmental challenges in northern Kenya, ensuring that the region’s concerns are heard at a national level.
The Borana community continues to secure significant representation. Notable figures include Kello Harsama, appointed Principal Secretary for ASALs, Mohammed Liban, Principal Secretary for Petroleum, and Nuh Mohamed, CEO of the Sports Fund. Wako Ejersa received the role of Director-General of KEMSA, and Kabale Tache became Chairperson of the National Land Commission.
However, concerns remain over the underrepresentation of the Sakuye, Rendile, and Burji communities. While Isiolo, Marsabit, and Tana River counties have made strides, more work is needed to ensure full inclusivity of all communities in national leadership.
These appointments mark a step forward for gender and regional representation in Kenya’s leadership. Still, the need for continued efforts to include smaller, marginalized communities remains urgent.
