Ministry of Health Addresses Surge in Respiratory Illnesses

The Ministry of Health, through its Office of the Director General for Health, has issued a press release addressing the recent surge in respiratory illnesses, particularly influenza cases. While concerns have been raised linking the increase in respiratory infections to the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron JN1 variant, the Ministry emphasizes the need for public reassurance and awareness regarding the situation.

The press release highlights the Ministry’s robust surveillance systems, which monitor the emergence and spread of flu and other pathogens across the country. Various surveillance mechanisms, including passive, sentinel, event-based, and mortality surveillance, are in place to track and manage potential outbreaks. Although increased cases of influenza have been reported, there has been no significant rise in hospitalizations and deaths attributed to COVID-19.

In response to the situation, the Office of the Director General provides key recommendations to the public to mitigate the spread of respiratory illnesses. These include practicing good respiratory hygiene, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, frequent handwashing, and using face masks in public spaces. Additionally, the Ministry advises considering influenza vaccination, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with underlying health conditions.

Dr. Patrick Amoth, Ag. Director General for Health, emphasizes on the importance of proactive measures and vigilance in combating respiratory illnesses amidst the ongoing illness. The Ministry’s efforts, coupled with public cooperation, aim to mitigate the impact of respiratory infections and safeguard public health.
