Rash of Motorcycle Thefts Plagues Garbatulla, Isiolo County

In recent months, Garbatulla, a serene town in Isiolo County, has been rocked by a spate of motorcycle thefts, leaving residents on edge and authorities scrambling to apprehend the perpetrators. The latest incident occurred on Monday night in Kurkuji village, Kinna ward, where a local businessman fell victim to a brazen robbery that turned violent.

According to reports, the victim had just returned home after a long day’s work, only to be ambushed by six armed assailants wielding rifles and crude weapons. In a harrowing ordeal, they forcibly took his new motorbike, registered as KMGJ 705R, before opening fire, injuring the victim’s leg as he attempted to seek refuge behind his gate.

The injured individual was swiftly rushed to Kinna Health Centre for urgent medical attention and later transferred to Maua Level Five Hospital for further treatment. Meanwhile, law enforcement authorities led by Garbatulla Deputy County Commissioner Stephen Nyakundi have launched a rigorous investigation into the incident.

So far, two suspects linked to the crime have been identified and are currently under pursuit. Deputy Commissioner Nyakundi remains optimistic about apprehending all involved parties, assuring the public of swift justice.

However, the investigation has unveiled potential layers to the crime beyond a simple robbery. Authorities are exploring the possibility of illicit activities, including drug trafficking, as a motive behind the attack. In recent times, Garbatulla has witnessed a surge in drug-related incidents, with clashes among dealers becoming increasingly common.

The local police force, despite its efforts, faces significant challenges in combating motorcycle thefts and related crimes. Intelligence suggests that stolen bikes are often smuggled across the border to neighbouring areas like Tigania East in Meru County, where they are disassembled and sold for parts, making recovery efforts daunting.

As the community grapples with these security concerns, there is a growing call for collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies and residents to curb criminal activities and restore peace to Garbatulla and its environs. Only through concerted action can the town reclaim its tranquility and security for all its inhabitants.
