Governor Ahmed Abdullahi of Wajir has been returned to office as the Chairman of the Council of Governors (CoG) following an election held by the county chiefs on Monday.
The vote, which took place during the Council’s meeting at the Delta Centre in Westlands, solidifies the leadership team for the upcoming year. Governor Mutahi Kahiga of Nyeri was also re-elected as the Vice Chairperson.
In a change to the executive lineup, Governor Muthomi Njuki of Tharaka Nithi was appointed as the new Whip, taking over the role from Nandi’s Governor Stephen Sang. The Whip is tasked with steering the Council’s legislative and administrative agenda.
A statement released after the election outlined the Council’s key priorities for its new term. Top among them are the full operationalization of the Devolution Training Institute and the implementation of the council’s 2022-2027 Strategic Plan.
The Council further affirmed its commitment to safeguarding the gains of devolution, finalizing the transfer of all devolved functions to counties, and growing the membership of the Ugatuzi Sacco.
